Don’t forget those IG Story Highlights

As a business, you have to treat your IG profile like your secondary website. If we think about where we go to search that new biz our friend’s just told us about, a lot of the time we look them up on Instagram before (or even, if) we bother googling them or tapping that link in bio.

Instagram is limited in the control you have of customising your profile. You’ve got your bio, profile picture, feed posts and then there’s your highlights

Apart from your bio, your highlights are where you have the most control over calling attention and directing your audience to discover something specific about your brand.

Here’s are some top tips and IG brand inspo to get your story highlights looking schmick.

  1. Make your covers look good.

Some people might disagree, but I strongly believe that wherever there’s a chance to make something look on brand, do it. It might be that you use your brand colours or for something more bespoke you could collaborate with an artist or designer. An easy an effective option is to grab some icons from Canva or Creative Market.

2. Have an 'About’

This is especially important if you’re a new business - people need to know who you are and what you do. Yes your bio should sum this up quite neatly, but give your audience a bit of an insight into your why and how. It doesn’t necessarily have to be labelled ‘about’ - it could be ‘hello!’, ‘FAQ’s’ or ‘meet us’.

3. Get creative with the other categories

Maybe you need a highlight for your folio? Or a highlight to keep all the resources for the social cause you strongly care about. If you have a product, perhaps a highlight of all user generated content is a good idea? Get creative. The names of your highlights are just another area to inject your brand personality into.

4. Don’t make your titles longer than 11 characters

I mean you can, but the full title won’t display and as well as poor readability, it’s just a little annoying on the eye. If you really need to fit in a couple of words maybe hashtag it like Refinery29 has done with #imacriminal.
